Overview
Dachshunds are bold, lively and full of character. Bred to hunt badgers, they are brave and independent, with a strong bond to their family.
Temperament
Dachshunds are typically described as bold, lively, stubborn, devoted. Individual personalities vary, and early socialisation and positive training shape how any dog behaves as an adult.
Size
A small breed: adults usually weigh 7–15 kg and stand 20–27 cm at the shoulder.
Exercise needs
Most healthy adults do well with about 40–60 minutes of activity a day. For an estimate tailored to your dog's age and weight, try the activity calculator.
Grooming
Grooming needs are rated 2/5. A weekly brush and occasional bath are usually enough.
Common considerations
- Their long back is vulnerable — discourage jumping off furniture and use ramps.
- Keeping them lean protects their spine.
- Can be wary of strangers without socialisation.
Feeding considerations
Strict portion control is important; even small weight gains matter for this breed. Not sure about a specific food? Use Can My Dog Eat This?
