Blueberries are a popular, low-calorie snack for dogs. They're small, naturally sweet and easy to use as training rewards.
Are blueberries safe for dogs?
For most healthy dogs, plain fresh or frozen blueberries are safe in small amounts. They contain fibre and antioxidants and are low in calories compared with many commercial treats.
How many blueberries can a dog eat?
A good rule of thumb is that treats should make up no more than about 10% of your dog's daily calories.
- Small dogs: a few berries
- Medium dogs: a small handful
- Large dogs: a handful
Tips for serving
- Wash berries before serving.
- Frozen blueberries can be a refreshing summer treat — but for very small dogs, halve them.
- Skip blueberry muffins, pies, yoghurts and anything sweetened. Some sugar-free products contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
Not all berries are equal
Unlike blueberries, grapes and raisins are dangerous for dogs. If you're ever unsure, check our Can My Dog Eat This? tool.
