How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog?
Bathe too often and you strip natural oils; too rarely and things get smelly. Here's a practical guide by coat type.

There's no single schedule that fits every dog. Coat type, lifestyle and skin all matter.
General guidelines
- Short, smooth coats: every 1–3 months, or when dirty.
- Long or silky coats: every 4–6 weeks, with regular brushing in between.
- Curly, low-shedding coats: every 3–6 weeks, often alongside professional grooming.
- Double coats: less often — brushing matters more than bathing.
Bathing tips
- Use a shampoo made for dogs; human products can irritate their skin.
- Lukewarm water, and rinse thoroughly.
- Dry ears well, especially for floppy-eared breeds.
When to ask your vet
If your dog is scratching a lot, has a strong odour, flaky skin or redness, speak with your vet rather than bathing more often.
