If your dog seems to nap all day, you're not alone. Dogs generally sleep much more than people.
Typical sleep ranges
- Puppies: around 18–20 hours a day
- Adult dogs: roughly 12–14 hours
- Senior dogs: often 14–18 hours
Larger breeds and less active dogs may sleep more.
Supporting good rest
- A comfortable, quiet bed away from busy areas
- Consistent daily routines
- Enough daytime exercise and mental stimulation
When to check with a vet
A sudden change in sleep — sleeping much more, being hard to wake, restlessness at night, or seeming lethargic when awake — is worth discussing with your veterinarian.
This is general educational information and does not replace advice from your veterinarian.
